Privacy
Being Human (beingahuman.net) is a free educational website. This page explains what we collect today and why. You can read the pages without creating an account.
What you can read without giving us anything
Most visits do not require you to type your name or email. There is no sign-in and no comment box.
Page measurements (Cloudflare)
Every page loads a small measurement script from Cloudflare (beacon.min.js) with a site token in the page source. This is Cloudflare Web Analytics. We use it to understand which pages are visited and whether the site is working, not to show you ads and not to sell a list of visitors.
According to Cloudflare's Web Analytics documentation, the beacon does not use cookies, localStorage, sessionStorage, or other browser storage for this measurement, and it does not fingerprint visitors for analytics. Cloudflare says it keeps unsampled beacon data for about 7 days and then stores a smaller aggregated copy, and that the dashboard history covers about the previous six months. See Cloudflare's Web Analytics FAQ.
What we do not use
This site does not load Microsoft Clarity. It does not record session playback of your visits, and it does not set Clarity cookies.
The newsletter (Buttondown)
If you type an email into the signup box, the form sends that address to Buttondown, which runs the Being Human letter (the list name in the form is beingahuman). The form also includes a hidden field used only to discourage automated spam. We ask for an email so we can send the free one-page body guide and the occasional letter described on the newsletter page. The pages say we use your email to send the letter, that you can unsubscribe with one click, and that you should not send medical details through the form.
The pages describe a confirmation step before the welcome note with the guide. You can also open the PDF without signing up: The Everyday Body: A One-Page Guide. We do not publish extra Buttondown settings here (for example, how long an address is kept after someone leaves). For how Buttondown handles subscriber data, see Buttondown's privacy policy and Buttondown's note on subscriber rights, including unsubscribe, data copy, and deletion requests.
Shopping links
A few pages include optional links to books on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Some book links on this page may earn a commission if you buy something, at no extra cost to you. A book link is a suggestion, not medical advice and not a claim that you need that book. Those books, when they are by JD, are also by this site's publisher, and that author connection is a material one. We do not add shopping links for supplements, pills, or other medical products.
Amazon may set its own cookies or collect its own information if you follow a link to Amazon. That happens on Amazon's site, under Amazon's rules.
What we do not collect on these forms
The pages do not include a comment box, a chat widget, or advertising code such as display ads. The signup form does not ask for a password, a payment card, or a home address.
How to reach us
For a correction, a topic suggestion, or a question about privacy or these pages, use the address on the Contact page: [email protected].
If you have a question about your mailing, you can also reply to any Being Human letter after you join, or use the unsubscribe link in any letter. If you need a copy or deletion of newsletter data, you can also use the rights described in Buttondown's own notices.
If this changes
If we later add advertising or new measurement tools, we will update this page to match what the site actually does, and we will label commercial links clearly.
